This week Year 1 visited Beamish open air museum. We had the chance to ride on a real steam train, a replica of the Puffing Billy that used to carry coal from the colliery in Wylam. After that we went down a real mine to see what it would have been like working in one….
Welcome To Year 1
I am Year 1’s class teacher, Miss Howells. In Year 1 you may also meet Miss Goody (Mon-Wed) and Miss Robson (Thurs-Fri) who are classroom assistants working in Year 1. Mrs Long, who covers PPA (planning, preparation and assessment time) teaches the children on Wednesday mornings.
In Year 1 children begin learning under the national curriculum and can expect a slightly more formal school day. This still includes lots of practical learning and play, as well as some special golden time for choosing activities during part of Friday afternoon. In Year 1 children are taught through topics, with a new topic each half term. Some of our topics are: Grand Designs; The Magic Toyshop; Funny Bones; Where the Wild Things are; Wonderful Wylam and Animal Magic. We also go on visits to a wide variety of places, such as Northern Stage, The Baltic Art Gallery, Alnwick Gardens and Beamish Open Air Museum.
Children can expect to learn a lot in Year 1, and hopefully have lots of fun too!
